Domaine Magoutes
Dimitrios Diamantis
Nestled in a windswept and arid location, amid an impressive rocky limestone terroir, lies the Magoutes Vineyard. The story of this vineyard began at the turn of the 20th century when Dimitrios Diamantis' grandfather, one of Siatista's leading grape growers, hand-grafted the now-centennial family vineyard. However, as grape growing became less profitable over time, most of the region's vineyards fell into obscurity, with only a few old vines surviving by the 1970s.
In the early 1990s, the winery began focusing on preserving and reviving local grape varieties. They managed to save enough genetic material to replant 18 hectares on the limestone/clay slopes of the "Magoutes" area, which sits at an altitude of 750 to 890 meters. This revival was made possible by Dimitri's relentless energy and the equally strong support and commitment of his business partner, George Papageorgiou, whose family also has roots in Siatista. The two families share a common vision: to protect and restore the region's viticultural heritage and to realize its potential for producing distinctive wines.
The first official bottling, a Xinomavro-Moschomavro blend, took place in 2002. Magoutes Winery specializes in producing PGI Siatista wines, a high-altitude zone recognized since 1993.
